Cross Works (XW) & DOME + Partners present a proposed masterplan for a 270 hectare site in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The residential-led masterplan for the land surrounding the largest mosque in Central Asia (the Nursultan Grand Mosque), is strategically located near the Astana Expo and the city’s main international airport.
The concept features two interconnected, concentric bands of development. The outer 'community-focussed' band focuses on residential and community functions, whilst the inner 'marketplace' band includes  commercial buildings, cultural facilities, and more social infrastructure.
A green space strategy separates the zones, creating parks for the local population and visitors alike, whilst also creating a buffer zone around the Grand Mosque in order to preserve its tranquility.
With a modest 1 million sq/m of development and an FAR of 0.4, the vision prioritizes sustainability, healthy living and the creation of compact urban centers.
